By Danny Ashton

The iPad has indeed reached worldwide popularity. Its handiness and functionality appeal to people of different ages from different walks of life. People find this gadget very useful whether for work or for play. Although not widely used in classroom settings as of the moment, the iPad can be very useful especially to the teacher in his/her class. The iPad can be an effective learning tool for the students and the teacher as well. Here are some ways in using the iPad in school.

1. The iPad is a perfect avenue for reading e-books.

When gathering your students to form reading groups, you can allow them to use an iPad for them to read an assigned e-book. Facilitating this as a group activity will foster teamwork and cooperation. The good thing with iPad is that you can store a lot of e-books in it, therefore saving much space.

2. Use the iPad just like any Internet-connected computer.

Do this by having students use Google Docs and install the Google Mobile apps for collaborative writing and multimedia creation activities. All these will help them in their homework. Let them subscribe to various periodicals and newspapers on the iPad and include a daily reading and discussion period.

4. Watch any number of quality online shows.

Your students may search by the topic of study. Moreover, they can bookmark and maintain a good list sources.

5. Research the various iPad apps and have students list and use them.

This will allow them to create an online resource guide for the iPad and school activities using Google Sites. Encourage them to try out various Twitter apps for the iPad, such as TweetFlow and set up a class Twitter account to keep track of activities throughout the school year. You may purchase the Keynote app and teach your students how to prepare professional presentations, using multimedia learning principles. Learn along with your students and take a class on iPhone and mobile development, working on an iPad app for your school.

A good application to purchase is the Toy Story Read-along, a free interactive eBook from Disney. The application can either read the story to you whilst highlighting the words, or you can record your own voice reading the story. Children can record their own voice reading, and either listen back or give it to another pupil who provides peer feedback on it.

Teaching does not have to be all paper-and-pencil. In as much as technology has helped your personal life, it should do great in the academe as well.

The iPad, because of its portability and high level of customization, makes it the perfect tool to aid teaching. With the fast pace of technological advancements, it is only but natural to keep up with the changes. Teaching the younger generations through the iPad will make learning more interactive and memorable.
