Double Eyelid Surgery: Ensuring A Successful Recovery

By Dr Andrew Kim

Blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries in the United States next to liposuction and breast augmentation. It is often asked for by many Asians to add dimension to their eyelids and is commonly known as double eyelid surgery or Asian blepharoplasty . It is also a procedure done to reduce eye puffiness and to correct a condition where the eyelid significantly droops, which is called ptosis.

If you are planning to have this procedure done, you might be wondering on what you can expect after the surgery. You must know that there are a number of things that you need to remember if you want to go through it without complications. But first of all, you must have someone who will drive you home because of the effects of anesthesia.

Right after surgery your eyelids will be taped in order to promote better contour and healing, so make sure that you don’t remove this. You might also experience excessive tearing, swelling on the sutured areas, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light. These reactions can last throughout the recovery period which is approximately two weeks or more. So make sure that prescribed treatment given to you by your doctor will be followed closely.

For this surgery, the doctor uses an absorbable suture that is why there is no need to go back and have it removed. An ointment also needs to be applied regularly on the site to keep it moist. Aside from that, you should avoid touching your eyelid so as not to disturb the healing process.

There will also be minimal chances of visible scarring because sutures are strategically placed along the natural skinfolds or behind the eyelids.

Over the course of the days your eyes may tend to dry, and for this your doctor will be prescribing you with eye drops to keep it lubricated. A pain medication will also be given to relieve the soreness due to the tightening of the eyelids. It is very important that you apply them properly and with aseptic technique. This is to prevent introducing infection and for the medication to take its full effect.

For the first couple of days after surgery, you need to avoid activities that promote eye dryness. This would include reading, using contact lenses, watching television or using the computer. To avoid this, you need to wear dark sunglasses for protection. This also protects it from sunlight, dust and wind, which can cause irritation. Short naps are also encouraged to prevent your eyes from being fatigued.

Stressful activities like crying, bending or heavy lifting should also be avoided because it causes blood to accumulate on the area around the eyes.

For the swelling, you can apply some cold compress on the site and have your head elevated with pillows while sleeping. This also minimizes bruising.

Do not be discouraged if you see that the swelling extends all over your face, or if you observe black eyes, because once you start to heal you will understand why your double eyelid surgery was well worth it!
